Positioned on a hill in the center of Reynolda Village sits an event venue called The Barn at Reynolda Village.
I recently had the opportunity to spend some time with The Barn’s Operations Manager, Dawn Siverson, for a “behind the scenes” look at what it’s like to manage events at this charming venue.

How did you transition from historic preservation to the event industry?
I worked in Old Salem as a maintenance technician in the restoration department when I was approached about supporting the museum’s development team at fundraising and private events. It didn’t take long for me to discover my passion for seeing events unfold and be successful. The next thing I knew, I was soon supporting events on a regular basis. So, I put away my painter’s overalls and donned the classic event khakis and logo shirt!
What drew you to The Barn at Reynolda Village?
Like so many people, I have always loved Reynolda Village and all it has to offer. Professionally, I was ready to shift focus to a more hands-on, operational aspect of event management. The opportunity of helping to start a new venue was very enticing, especially at a venue that is such an integral part of Winston-Salem’s history and that was being so thoughtfully repurposed. Talk about a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
I get to bring my dog to the office! But, seriously, pleasing our clients and their guests. I get to work in a location that is aesthetically pleasing to my heart and eyes. I tend to wear my passion on my sleeve, and the time I spend working with my teammates and our clients brings me great satisfaction.
What do you often hear clients say about The Barn at Reynolda Village?
That the classic architecture and breathtaking gardens are what draws them to the venue, but the relationships with our team are what make them stay!
What do you think is the best feature of The Barn at Reynolda Village for your wedding clients?
Me! (laughter) OK, if I had to pick only one feature, it would be the crisp, clean, neutral palette. It makes a fabulous backdrop for all kinds of terrific events, from black tie and crystal to floral prints and greenery.
What would our readers be surprised to learn about the role of an Ops Manager?
Attention to the smallest details, painting, cleaning, working with our amazing landscape team, maintaining our kitchen equipment, chairs and tables, and so much more are all part of my daily routine. While most people only see the fun side, they don’t see the behind-the-scenes efforts that take place to ensure a stress-free event day in our beautiful surroundings. And, that’s how it should be. It’s all about providing an amazing venue space for our clients!
What’s your best piece of advice to a wedding client that is looking for a venue?
Be sure that the venue itself “fits” you and that it is comfortable for the number of guests you wish to have. Be sure that if you are planning for outdoor use of a venue, there is an appropriate back-up plan in case Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate!
Since opening in 2016, what has been your most memorable event at The Barn?
Every event is memorable! But, for me, it always comes down to relationships. There was a unique wedding celebration in 2019 with a family from California that used The Barn in such a new way! They brought in chandeliers and soft seating, and the set-up was designed for a small intimate ceremony followed by a larger cocktail party. It wasn’t traditional tables of seated guests but more mix and mingle. I got to be very close with the family and enjoyed being a part of their creative approach to such a special day! It is so nice to hear from many of my new friends years after their event.
